Phase II of LAX Master Plan is initiated. Facility requirements are assessed and a total of 30 concepts are developed and reviewed by LAWA (then the Department of Airports) between February and November of 1996. |

Four airport development alternatives are unveiled.
- Five Runway: new runway north airfield
- Six Runway East: two new 6,000 ft runways, one north, one south; shift and extend other runways to the east
- Six Runway West: two new 6,000 ft runways, one north, one south; shift north airfield westward.
- Hawthorne: 6,000 ft runway, connection via transit

LAWA and the FAA issue Notice of Preparation/Notice of Intent to prepare EIS/EIR, followed by a series of public meetings to help define the scope of the EIS/EIR. |
